| Doubleday was born in Ballston Spa, New York on June 26, 1819. He spent his childhood in upstate New York. |
| Doubleday's grandfather was a veteran of the Revolutionary War and his father served in the War of 1812. |
| He graduated from the United States Military Academy in West Point in 1842. He was made a second lieutenant in the 3rd U.S. Artillery. |
| On March 3, 1847, Doubleday was promoted to first lieutenant, following the Battle of Buena Vista. |
| Doubleday was in the Third Seminole War in Florida from 1856 to 1858. From there, he was stationed in Fort Moultrie, South Carolina. |
| He was at Fort Sumter, South Carolina on April 12, 1861, when the Confederates fired the first shots of the Civil War. Doubleday fired a cannon ball in return, the first shot from the Union of the war. |
